Fairy folklore for Cruinniú

This year’s Cruinniú na nÓg will spread its (fairy) wings for a special cross-border event in Cavan Burren Park.

‘Fairy Folklore – A Giant Adventure at the Geopark’ is an exciting family fun day full of creativity celebrating the many myths and legends surrounding Cavan Burren Park, taking place on Cruinniú na nÓg, Ireland’s national day of youth and creativity, Saturday, 15th June between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm.

In a first for Cruinniú na nÓg, this event will feature a cross border-collaboration between Cavan County Council and Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, who jointly manage the Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark, the world’s first cross-border Geopark.

Tales of giant’s graves, druids’ alters, and ghostly water horses surround the otherworldly Cavan Burren Park, and this special event will immerse children and young people in the mythology of this ethereal landscape, before taking them on a journey of creativity through different creative media.

The project has been made possible through funding of €10,000 secured under the Cruinniú na nÓg Shared Island initiative, secured by Cavan County Council through Creative Cavan.

Gráinne O’Connor, Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark Manager said “Cavan Burren Park is a magical place where you can’t help but be inspired, and so it’s the perfect place for children and young people on both sides of the border to unleash their creativity for Cruinniú na nÓg. Our Geopark is an example of the excellent collaboration that has taken place between Cavan County Council and Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and we are delighted to be able to work together to inspire kids from all across the Geopark this Cruinniú”.

Emma Clancy, County Librarian and Head of Cultural Services with Cavan County Council said, “We are delighted with the support of the Cruinniú na nÓg Shared Island initiative, which will allow us to host a truly memorable event at Cavan Burren Park on 15th June. Of course, this is just one of many wonderful creative events we will have lined up for Cruinniú na nÓg this year, so keep an eye on the library’s website and social media channels for more exciting updates.”
