A commemorative bench in honour of the late Séamus Ó hUltacháin (Jim Nolan) was officially opened at Cavan Burren Park on Sunday, 7 June, by Councillor John Paul Feeley.

The event brought together family members, friends, and members of the local community to remember and celebrate Jim Nolan’s life and his connection to the area. The bench stands as a lasting tribute, offering a peaceful spot for visitors to reflect while taking in the unique landscape of the Burren.

Speaking at the opening, Councillor Feeley acknowledged the significance of the dedication, noting the importance of recognising individuals who have had a meaningful impact on their community. ‘It is a personal privilege to be able to dedicate this bench to Jim today. I spent many days here in Cavan Burren Park with Jim, trying to absorb the wealth of knowledge he had for the place. Being joined today by Maura, Jim’s family, friends, so many from the local community and of course his fellow Geopark Ambassadors, I know this bench will be visited often and Jims memory and legacy will live on.’

Gráinne O’Connor, Manager of Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark in recognition of Jims time as a Geopark Ambassador said ‘I am delighted to see this bench unveiled today in a place that we know was so special to Jim. His work was instrumental in bringing this prehistoric landscape to life, sharing it with so many however his greatest legacy was not what he discovered but what he inspired in others. He encouraged us to value our history, to respect our landscape, and to take pride in the heritage that surrounds us. His curiosity was infectious and his love for this place unmistakable. It is lovely to be joined by many of our Geopark Ambassadors who will, I have no doubt, continue to carry on Jim’s work for years to come.’

The ceremony was marked by a warm sense of remembrance and appreciation, with those in attendance sharing memories and paying tribute to Jim Nolan.

The newly unveiled bench will serve as a lasting legacy in his memory and a valued addition to the park for all who visit.
