‘Burren Bites: A Taste of Time’ – A New Food Trail Experience at Cavan Burren Park

Published: 3 June 2025

Step into a world where prehistoric landscapes meet modern plate at Burren Bites: A Taste of Time, a captivating new food event in the heart of Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark. Taking place on Sunday 29 June in the ancient surroundings of Cavan Burren Park, this guided food trail blends landscape, culture and cuisine into one unforgettable experience.

Burren Bites invites guests on an immersive journey through one of Ireland’s most iconic geological and archaeological landscapes, accompanied by a six-course tasting menu crafted by award winning Chef and Geopark Regenerative Tourism Network Member, John Roche. Each course is served at unique stops along the trail with reference to the geological and archaeological wonders of this site and created in collaboration with local food producers from Cavan and Fermanagh.

With tours departing every 30 minutes from 1pm, participants will be led by Geopark Ambassadors who will share the ancient stories hidden in the stones beneath their feet – while they savour food rooted in tradition and full of local flavour.

Speaking about the inaugural Burren Bites food event, Chair of the Geopark Committee, Councillor Anthony Feely, said: “Having recently developed the Geopark Food Story, the Burren Bites event is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the depth and quality of food produce across our Geopark. It’s more than just a celebration of great taste – it’s a reflection of the unique landscape and rich cultural heritage that shape every bite. Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark, through the cross-border partnership of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and Cavan County Council, is committed to supporting businesses and communities across the Geopark through events such as this.”

Guests can expect a taste experience like no other, with highlights ranging from an artisan welcome selection of canapés that echo the textures of the Burren, to bespoke refreshments inspired by the panoramic views of Tullygobbin. From bold modern spins on traditional breakfasts to sweet treats shaped by the glacial history of the land, Burren Bites is a true taste of time.

Councillor John-Paul Feeley, Vice Chair of the Geopark Committee, added: “I am delighted this event is to take place at Cavan Burren Park, a significant site within our Geopark. Burren Bites is a powerful platform to highlight the extraordinary food heritage we have here. The quality and character of our local produce are deeply rooted in the landscape, shaped by generations of tradition, care, and respect for nature. Our local producers are telling the story of the Geopark through food, and I’m proud to see this region’s authentic flavours take centre stage.”

The event is testament to the strong partnerships and collaborations that exist across the Geopark with participating members from the Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark Regenerative Tourism Business Network, the Created in Cavan Food & Drink Network, and the Sperrins and Erne Food Partnership; a community of local producers dedicated to showcasing the region’s best culinary offerings.

Dermot Gallagher, Food Strategy Co-Ordinator with Created in Cavan said: “We are delighted to be part of the Geopark Burren Bites event, showcasing the excellent local produce that our place has to offer. This event offers an opportunity to link the unique flavours of Cavan with its stunning landscapes.”
Whether you’re a food enthusiast or a nature lover, Burren Bites promises to be a very special event.
