Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark Launches 25th Anniversary Celebrations

Published: 27 October 2026

Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark last week officially opened a programme of celebrations to mark 25 years since the Geopark first received European Geopark designation in 2001, becoming one of the pioneering Geoparks in Europe and a founding member of a movement that has since grown into a global network of 241 UNESCO Global Geoparks.

The anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable journey of the Geopark over the past quarter century and to celebrate the partnerships, communities and shared vision that have made it one of the leading examples of sustainable regional development through geological heritage.

The vision behind the original designation was innovative and far ahead of its time. The founders recognised that the area’s unique geological and natural heritage could provide a catalyst for sustainable economic development, environmental stewardship, education and community benefit. Long before collaborative, place-based approaches became commonplace, the Geopark demonstrated how partnership working could create lasting value for people, place and future generations.

A significant milestone in the Geopark’s development came in 2008 when Cavan County Council joined the then Marble Arch Caves Geopark, establishing the first transnational Geopark in the world. Since then, the collaboration has demonstrated how working across administrative boundaries can deliver tangible benefits for communities while creating a shared vision for the protection, promotion and sustainable development of one of the most distinctive landscapes on the island of Ireland.

Speaking about the celebrations, Councillor John Paul Feeley, Chair of the Geopark Committee said:

“Geopark25 is about celebrating 25 years of vision, innovation and partnership. We celebrate the potential of our geological heritage to support communities, inspire learning and drive sustainable development. As we look back, we also commit to continued collaboration between Cavan County Council and Fermanagh and Omagh District Council to the next chapter of the Geopark.’

Speaking at the event, Councillor Anthony Feely, Vice Chair of the Geopark committee added:

‘Today, we recognise the people who have made this happen.  Those who had the vision to pursue this 25 years ago and whose ambition helped establish a movement that has grown across the world, those who have continued to champion and advocate for the Geopark to make it what it is today.  We are proud that Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark has been part of that story of Geoparks from the very beginning.”

The Geopark model is founded on a community-centred approach, and this has been a key driver of its success. Through education programmes, community engagement initiatives, business networks, volunteer opportunities and cross-border projects, local people have become active participants in shaping the future of the region.

The partnership has delivered significant benefits in conservation, environmental stewardship and education. Through strong working relationships with the Geological Survey of Ireland, the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland, tourism agencies, environmental bodies, schools, community organisations and local businesses, the Geopark has helped raise awareness of internationally important geological and natural heritage while supporting research, conservation initiatives and educational activities.

Gráinne O’Connor, Manager of Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark said:

“The Geopark’s success is measured not only by international recognition or visitor numbers, but by the strength of the partnerships and communities that stand behind it. The investments secured, the opportunities created for businesses and communities, and the conservation and educational benefits delivered over the last 25 years demonstrate what can be achieved when people work together towards a shared vision. As we begin these celebrations, we look forward with confidence to the next chapter in the Geopark’s story.”

The anniversary programme will celebrate the Geopark’s rich heritage, showcase its achievements and recognise the individuals, communities, organisations and partners who have contributed to its success over the past 25 years. It will also provide an opportunity to inspire future generations and reaffirm the Geopark’s commitment to sustainable development, environmental stewardship, education and cross-border collaboration. As one of the founding members of the international Geopark movement, Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark can look back with pride on its contribution to a global success story while continuing to build a sustainable and resilient future for the communities it serves.
