Heritage

The natural history of this part of County Fermanagh can be traced back as far as 340 million years ago when this area was covered by a shallow tropical sea. The tropical sea left behind layers of lime-rich mud and the remains of dead sea creatures, which over millions of years became fossil-rich limestone. Fossils of these creatures can now be found throughout the Geopark.

Living memory of the great Ice Age can be spotted from this viewpoint. As the ice sheets travelled slowly across the landscape, they produced moraine at their base, which shaped and moulded the rolling drumlins, which can be seen from this incredible, panoramic view. Examples of these drumlins can be found throughout the Geopark, displaying nature as the Earth’s most incredible artist.

The view does an excellent job of showcasing some of the finest features of the Geopark. Forests that go for miles, blankets of bogland and the highs and lows of valleys can be viewed as far as the eye can see. You also may catch a glimpse of some rarely sighted red squirrels, pine martens, deer and butterflies from this magical viewpoint.

Over the island of Ireland’s colourful history, there have been vast changes to the landscape and environment. Gortalughany Viewpoint is a perfect display of a melting pot of eras and historical periods.
