Marlbank Viewpoint
The natural history of this part of County Fermanagh can be traced back as far as 340 million years ago when this area was covered by a shallow tropical sea. The tropical sea left behind layers of lime-rich mud and the remains of dead sea creatures, which over millions of years became fossil-rich limestone. Fossils of these creatures can now be found throughout the Geopark.
The MacNean Valley is now occupied by two lakes, joined together by a small river that separates the border villages of Belcoo (County Fermanagh) and Blacklion (County Cavan). The valley that now lies beneath the Marlbank Viewpoint was carved out during the last Ice Age, around 18,000 years ago when huge ice sheets scoured out and deepened the valley floor allowing Lough MacNean to form.
Not only did this ice remove large chunks, but also left some debris behind. As the ice sheets travelled slowly across the landscape, they produced moraine at their base, which shaped and moulded the rolling drumlins, which can be seen from this viewpoint, at Lough MacNean. Examples of these drumlins can be found throughout the Geopark, and they truly are great artistry of nature.
The view does an excellent job of showcasing some of the finest features of the Geopark. From modern views, such as the large quarry that has formed to great size over the years, to the sweeping valleys that were formed by ice sheets thousands of years ago.
Over the island of Ireland’s colourful history, there have been vast changes to the landscape and environment. Marlbank Viewpoint is a perfect display of a melting pot of eras and historical periods.
We would recommend a visit here if you’re searching for mesmerising landscapes, lovely peace and quiet and an insight into some fascinating geological heritage.
