Lough MacNean Amenity Area

Lough MacNean is a large freshwater lake divided into two parts. Lower Lough MacNean the smaller eastern lake, located in County Fermanagh whilst Upper Lough MacNean, the larger western lake, is split between County Fermanagh, County Cavan, and County Leitrim.

On the strip of land between the two lakes are the villages of Belcoo and Blacklion, in the heart of the Geopark. The lake itself is suitable for boat fishing for Pike as well as Trout, usually during the mayfly season.

Facilities: car parking, interpretation, picnic area, playground, an adult gym facility, jetty. Interpretation, and toilets.

Heritage

Lough MacNean Amenity Area is a popular fishing spot for locals and tourists alike. The structure of the site is similar to Lough Erne with lots of islands and secluded bays, which makes for an interesting view. Upper Lough MacNean is a cross border lake, with 983 hectares, of which 458 are in Northern Ireland. You’ll find varying species in and out of the water. For the avid fisherman, there are numerous species that dwell in these waters to include, pike, perch, bream, roach, hybrids and brown trout.

 

This spot is perfect for a tranquil afternoon fishing, enjoying a good book and simply just soaking up the beauty and sanctuary that can always be found in the Geopark.
